BUSINESS LINKS WITH THE SECONDARY SECTOR

The main support available to secondary schools are:

  • Work Experience
  • Professional Development
  • Education Business Link Activity

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience is a key aspect of preparation for the world of work in all Cumbrian Schools. Pupils in years 10 & 11, aged 14-16, have an entitlement to 10 days work experience and most achieve at least 5 days with a local employer. This is usually taken in one full week, but sometimes one or more days per week, over a longer period.

The CBEC Work Experience Team work with schools to co-ordinate an average of 6500 placements every year to support pupil development needs and to learn more about the world of work. For pupils, a quality placement is an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, develop social, vocational, creative and enterprising skills together with a sense of responsibility and professionalism. This is only achieved with continued co-operation and goodwill of local employers. For employers, taking part in work experience can help build links with the future workforce, the local community, develop the training and supervisory skills of staff, and raise the profile of career opportunities in their sector. CBEC continually promotes the value of work experience to employers as new placements are needed throughout the year.

Support to schools

CBEC can provide assistance to new work experience co-ordinators to help them understand the process, risks, legal implications as well as assisting with pre-placement preparation, H&S briefing, finding placements, work experience database and placement debriefing.

To support all school work experience co-ordinators CBEC has produced a variety of documents to assist schools in the process:

  • Work Experience Guidelines
  • Work Experience Policy

CBEC's team of area advisors and administrators can support schools with issues, queries, accidents, advice or any other matter to help the process run smoothly.
